MX-5
Here’s one of motoring’s biggest mysteries. Why does the Mazda MX-5, the best selling sports car ever, have no rivals? Perhaps it’s in view of the fact that Guinness World Records has certified the iconic roadster as the world’s highest-selling two-seat open-top sports car in history, with more than 850,000 units produced through to December 2008; a record which continues to grow every day.
Or maybe it’s because of the more than 170 awards that the MX-5 has received globally since its launch in 1989, including 2005-2006 Japan Car of the Year and New Zealand Car of the Year in 2005.
Sure, there are bigger, more expensive sports cars but they miss the point. Through two full redesigns in 1998 and 2005, Mazda engineers focused on preserving the MX-5 traditions of delivering an intimate connection between car and driver – a concept penned as “Jinbai Ittai”, translated as “rider and horse” as one. Now into its third generation, the lightweight and optimially balanced MX-5 evolved into a dynamic open-top sports car with enhanced safety and eco-friendly features. And to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this storied roadster, Mazda has launched a freshened third-generation MX-5 which carries forward the spirit of open-top driving that will never cease creating countless smiles per mile, in a way that only Zoom-Zoom can.
